Part 2: From Idea to Instrument: A Case Study in In-House Instrument Fabrication

Nathan Tykocki, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology at Michigan State University. His research focuses on urinary bladder physiology with specific emphasis on mechanisms responsible for the sensation of bladder fullness. Current funded projects are (1) exploring social stress and how its duration and intensity causes bladder dysfunction, and (2) investigating how alterations in urinary bladder blood flow and vascular contractility affect bladder function in normal conditions and in the setting of diabetes.

As a follow-up to his Part 1 CAIRIBU Catalyst Conversation, Dr. Nathan Tykocki, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Michigan State University, will use some of his own work to demonstrate how he goes from a rough sketch in his head to a fully functional research tool. He will cover all the considerations you need to keep in mind when designing scientific tools, ways to keep costs down, and navigating some of the intellectual property rules you may run up against. This presentation will go one step beyond 3D printing alone. He will also touch on how basic electronic design, process automation, and microcontrollers can be leveraged to make complex scientific instruments that rival – if not exceed – the accuracy and precision of their commercial counterparts.
