Part 1: 3D Printing for Smarties (that know nothing about 3D printing)


Nathan Tykocki, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology at Michigan State University. His research focuses on urinary bladder physiology with specific emphasis on mechanisms responsible for the sensation of bladder fullness. Current funded projects are (1) exploring social stress and how its duration and intensity causes bladder dysfunction, and (2) investigating how alterations in urinary bladder blood flow and vascular contractility affect bladder function in normal conditions and in the setting of diabetes.


Rapid prototyping and 3D printing technology has moved well beyond the confines of Big Manufacturing applications. Today, even the most basic 3D printer can produce highly intricate designs in a fraction of the time and cost. But what exactly can 3D printing do, and how can we use it to further our science? In the first part of this 2-part series, we will delve into the 3D printing/desktop fabrication technologies available to us for use in the lab and how these can be leveraged for making scientific instrumentation. We will also cover the digital design software options and 3D model repositories to help you get your mind churning.
