This monthly virtual seminar series, sponsored by the UW-Madison U54 George M. O’Brien Urology Center, will feature presentations that showcase the research of K12 scholars in the CAIRIBU KURe and KUroEpi programs and enhances their visibility in the benign GU research community.
This month’s seminar features Alexandra Polasko, PhD, postdoctoral fellow, Stanford University, K12 Scholar at the CAIRIBU K12 Urology Research at Stanford (KUReS) Career Development Program. Currently, Dr. Polasko’s research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms that drive benign prostate hyperplasia, which is the abnormal growth of the prostate and affects nearly 80% of men over eighty and can result in impaired urine storage and voiding as well as renal failure. Her K12 work specifically focuses on the role of bone morphogenic protein 5 (BMP5) in the pathophysiology of BPH. Dr. Polasko was awarded Best Poster Presentation for her poster “Establishment and Characterization of a Patient-Derived Xenograft Model of Human Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia” at the 2023 CAIRIBU Annual Meeting.
