Alison Huang, MD, MAS, was selected for funding by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) for a proposal in patient-centered healthcare research. Dr. Huang is the PI of the CAIRIBU KUroEpi Career Development Program at the University of California San Francisco.

Dr. Huang’s grant is titled “Antibiotic-Sparing Strategies to Prevent Urinary Tract Infection After Menopause.” Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common after menopause, resulting in one or more UTIs per year for 1 in 10 postmenopausal women. UTIs can severely affect quality of life for these women, impeding on daily activities.

Antibiotics can be helpful in preventing recurrent UTIs, however, prolonged antibiotic use can have negative side effects. Dr. Huang will study three approaches for postmenopausal recurrent UTIs: vaginal estrogen, oral methenamine, and a combination of both treatments. She hopes to use this study to help guide future UTI treatment approaches.
