Collaboration Tips – Whitney Sweeney, PhD

Working across disciplines helps us get a deeper understanding of urologic conditions and develop better health solutions. However, most researchers aren’t trained to step outside their own field, and the training that is available frequently targets principal investigators (PIs). Thus, a lot of trainees wonder how they can help their teams work better together. Below, I share five practical ways trainees can make the most of their collaborative experiences.

Engage in team-building activities and social events. These can strengthen relationships and improve overall team cohesion.

  1. Practice clear and open communication. Share your ideas, ask questions, and actively listen. This ensures everyone feels heard and all are on the same page.
  2. Build trust on your team. Be reliable, consistent in your work, and honest about your capabilities and limitations. Offer help when others are struggling and celebrate their successes to build a supportive and collaborative team environment.
  3. Proactively manage your work. Stay organized to manage tasks, meet deadlines, and reduce team stress. Take initiative and contribute beyond your role to show commitment and inspire others.
  4. Be adaptable and open to feedback. Embrace change, adjust as needed, and foster continuous learning through constructive input.

Trainees play a vital role in successful research collaborations—even if they’re not the PI. Team members can make a big impact by showing up, communicating clearly, building trust, staying organized, and being open to feedback. These five simple strategies can help trainees contribute meaningfully and strengthen their teams.
