Urology Times Feat. Scott Bauer – Deprescribing Medication for BPH
Scott Bauer, MD, MS was recently featured in Urology Times for his study on deprescribing medication for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Dr. Bauer leads the CAIRIBU Uro-Aging Research Interest Group, and his research focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying urologic aging and defining clinical phenotypes and biomarkers for older adults with debilitating urologic conditions. Dr. Bauer is also a K12 Alumnus of the UCSF K12 Urologic Epidemiology Career Development Program as well as a U54 O’Brien Center Opportunity Pool awardee.
In “Tamsulosin Deprescribing for Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Older Men: A Randomized Clinical Trial,” Dr. Bauer’s proof-of-concept randomized clinical trial suggests that patients receiving long-term medication for lower urinary tract symptoms associated with BPH may benefit from discontinued medication. In the Urology Times article, Dr. Bauer notes that although long-term medication is common in BPH patients, little evidence supports its benefits. He states that the “balance between benefit and harm may change over time,” indicating a need for periodic intervention and personalized care.
Although conducted on a small scale, this clinical trial highlights the importance of individualized approaches to BPH treatment, and we look forward to seeing how Dr. Bauer builds on this work in future studies.
